Baza is in the province of Granada and is high in the mountains at the end of the A334 Almanzora Valley road. The town is on the edge of the natural park of Sierra de Baza with peaks rising to over 2000 metres.
A few kilometers to the north of Baza , at Zújar, is the Embalse del Negratin, a man made lake of grand proportions which is a good spot for walking, picnicing and other outdoor pursuits like climbing, paragliding, etc. The nearby Jabalcón mountain stands at 1496 metres above sea level.
There is also a natural hot spring at the edge of the lake where one can bathe in the warm spa waters for a couple of euros and enjoy the view over the lake. The restaurant by the spa baths is also worthy of note and a good lunch can be had here.
Further around the lake to the west near Freila there is an area which is almost like the seaside with a little beach where pedalos can sometimes be hired in the summertime. Sailing, windsurfing and fishing are available here too. There is also a very nice restaurant here by the side of the lake.
In and around Freila there are many cave houses which are interesting to look at.
There is also a 12th century castle and an ancient tower, La Torre de la Maruq, from where there are beautiful views over the lake and surrounding countyside.
